The Air In Your House Is Not As Clean As It Smells
Here's a very Cape Town moment: you open all the windows to let the Southeaster blow through the flat, spritz down the kitchen counters with something lemon-scented, and think — nice, fresh, clean. Job done.
Except "fresh" isn't a smell. It's a marketing decision. And the science on what's actually floating around your lounge after a cleaning session is a lot less breezy than the bottle wants you to believe.
What's actually in the air
Most conventional cleaning sprays, all-purpose cleaners and air fresheners release what's called VOCs — volatile organic compounds. These are chemicals that evaporate easily at room temperature, which is exactly why you can smell them. The moment you spray, wipe or plug in an air freshener, you're releasing a cocktail of these compounds into a space that's usually a lot smaller and less ventilated than outdoors — your bathroom, your kitchen, your kid's bedroom.
The US EPA and California's Air Resources Board have both flagged fragrance as the biggest VOC contributor in most cleaning products. In some products tested, the fragrance compounds called terpenes — the stuff that gives you that "pine forest" or "citrus burst" smell — made up as much as a quarter of the total product. On their own, terpenes aren't the main villain. The problem is what happens when they meet ozone in the air (which is naturally present indoors, especially with electronics and printers around): that reaction produces secondary pollutants, including formaldehyde, along with ultrafine particles small enough to travel deep into your lungs.
None of this requires you to be doing anything wrong. Mopping the floor, wiping the counters, spraying the loo — completely normal Tuesday — is enough to trigger it.
The health case isn't fringe science anymore
This isn't essential-oil-shop pseudoscience. It's in the peer-reviewed literature and public health guidance:
- The American Lung Association points out that VOCs can irritate your eyes, nose and throat, trigger headaches and nausea, and in sensitive individuals, inflame the airways and worsen asthma.
- A large research review found that long-term, frequent use of cleaning sprays and scented products was linked to reduced heart rate variability in older women — a marker doctors use as an early warning sign for cardiovascular strain.
- Studies on domestic cleaning exposure during pregnancy have found associations with wheeze and lung function issues in children later on.
- Occupational studies on professional cleaners (people exposed to this stuff daily, for years) consistently show elevated rates of asthma and respiratory disease.
And here's the bit that should really give you pause: research on fragranced products — including so-called "green" or "natural" scented products — found hazardous compounds being released with little difference between the eco-marketed ones and the conventional ones. In other words, a nice-sounding label ("eucalyptus fresh," "ocean breeze") tells you almost nothing about what's actually being released into your air. Fragrance formulas are proprietary, so companies aren't required to disclose the individual chemicals that make up "fragrance" on the label at all.
Why this matters more indoors than out
We spend the overwhelming majority of our lives indoors, and indoor air doesn't have a Cape Doctor to blow it out to sea. It recirculates. VOCs from cleaning products can lounge around in a room for hours, sometimes days, especially with windows closed (hello, load shedding evenings when everything's shut up and the extractor fan's not running). Poorly ventilated flats, small bathrooms, and homes with kids or pets low to the ground — closer to surfaces that were just sprayed — carry the highest exposure.
None of this is about scaring you off cleaning. Under-cleaning your home brings its own very real risks. It's about being honest that "clean-smelling" and "clean air" are two completely different things, and that the second one has been quietly overlooked for decades in favour of the first.
